The Personal Journal is the heart of Write Your Journey. It's a fully immersive, authentic 1899 leather-bound diary that lets you document every moment of your adventure in Red Dead Redemption 2. Every page feels real, every word matters, and every drawing tells a story.

How It Works

  How to Open Your Journal

  Press J (or hold for 3 seconds if configured) to open your journal. The authentic leather cover appears with smooth animations.

  • ENTER - Open the book and see your pages spread out

  Configurable in WriteYourJourney.ini: OpenJournalKey=J under [Settings]

  Writing Your Story

  Press W to enter writing mode. Your cursor appears on the right page, ready to capture your thoughts.

  • Write freely with the authentic handwritten font
  • W - Press again to return to reading mode
  • Auto-save - Everything is saved as you type

  Drawing & Sketching

  Press D to enter drawing mode. Sketch maps, portraits, or anything that inspires you using your mouse.

  • E - Toggle eraser mode
  • Z - Increase eraser size
  • X - Decrease eraser size
  • SHIFT - Access advanced tools (brushes, colors, line thickness)

  Reading & Navigation

  Press R to enter reading mode. Navigate through your journal pages with ease.

  • Arrow Keys - Navigate between pages
  • R - Press again while focused on a page to zoom in
  • F - Toggle between handwritten and readable fonts
  • K - Bookmark important pages and jump back to them later

  Chapter Organization

  Your journal is organized by chapters. Each chapter represents a new phase of your journey.

  • Automatic grouping - Pages are organized for easy access
  • Quick navigation - Flip through pages or jump to specific chapters

  Day & Night Cycle

  The journal adapts to the time of day in-game.

  • Nighttime (9 PM - 6 AM) - Pages take on a warm, candlelit appearance
  • Natural lighting - Shifts from dawn to dusk to match your journey

  Closing Your Journal

  Several ways to close your journal depending on the situation:

  • ESC (hold 2s) - Save and close normally
  • Y (hold 10s) - Emergency close (failsafe)
  • V - Appreciate the view (freezes controls but allows camera movement)
